The Polar water bottle (click to check the current price on Amazon) can be placed in the freezer safely and then will keep your water really cold throughout the day.

The way you can freeze the water in this bottle is by filling it about halfway full and then letting the bottle sit in the freezer. When you are ready to go out just fill in the rest, and you are ready to go.

If you want the water to be as cold as possible, you can fill it up with cold water or even add some ice cubes.

Do not fill the water bottle all the way to the top before freezing it as this may break it.

I like to freeze some water and then have the bottle with me during the day, especially during the hotter days of summer. It is refreshing and a great way to stay a bit cooler.

I like the versatility of this one as it has excellent insulation and at the same time, it can easily be placed on a bicycle or just carried around (I find the carrying strap very convenient).

It is a wide mouth water bottle. This is good for several reasons. You can fit in ice cubes or other things in it. Also, wide mouth water bottles are generally a lot easier to clean. Additionally, this bottle is also dishwasher safe.

The cap seals tightly, and it doesn’t leak.

Let me point out that despite being made from plastic, this bottle is 100% BPA-free and phthalate-free as well. It is made from low-density polyethylene (LDPE) which is a food-grade approved material.

LDPE is considered okay, and it is not known to leach any harmful chemicals or toxins.

I wasn’t too sure what to expect from this bottle. It is definitely not what you normally expect to see.

However, this bottle is definitely offering a new angle when talking about water bottles.

Most importantly, it is freezer safe. However, as noted with the Polar bottle, make sure not to fill it all the way up. When leaving it in the freeze, fill it all the way to the middle in order for the water to have enough space to expand.

I really like that it is so flexible. It can be rolled up when empty so you can fit it easily in smaller spots or your backpack, for example. This makes it a perfect option for hiking and traveling. Even if there is no water in the bottle, it can still stand up on its own if the sleeve is left in the middle.

It is made from food-grade materials that are free of any BPA, BPS, PVC, phthalates, and latex.

It is also easy to clean as it has a wide-mouth and dishwasher-safe too. (click to check the current price on Amazon)

3. CamelBak Podium Water Bottle

CamelBak (click to check the current price on Amazon) is a well-known manufacturer of water bottles, and some of their bottles are good and versatile.

What I really like about the Podium bottle from CamelBak is that it has a very neat design. It is very light, easy to use, and squeeze.

Just like the Polar water bottle, this too has two-walled construction, which is offering very good insulation capabilities.

The material used is polypropylene, that is BPA and BPS-free.

CamelBak has stated that some of their bottles can be used in the freezer. What they recommend is that you do not fill it more than 3/4 so that the water has enough space as it expands. (1)

I would even suggest not to gill it up more than 1/2 of the way up.

What You Need to Look for When Buying a Water Bottle

Today we have a vast range of different kinds of water bottles. With so many different kinds of products on the market, choosing the right one can be a daunting task.

I want to make things easier. Because of that, here I will go through some of the essential aspects and features of the different water bottles.

Keep this in mind when deciding on your new bottle. That way, you will be more satisfied with your choice.

1. Purpose

The first thing you need to decide on is where and in what situations you are going to be using your bottle.

Different people will have different things in mind, and this will affect all of the little details I have listed down below.

2. The size

One of the most important things in choosing the best water bottle is going to be its size.

When and where you will be using your water bottle may play a big role in deciding on the right size.

If you are looking for a bottle that you will use when working out in the gym, you will need a bottle with higher capacity.

On the other hand, depending on where you are, you may not be able to bring a big bottle of water with yourself. Imagine having to run a few miles while holding a big gallon water bottle.

Working out or being outside in the hot weather can increase your needs to drink water, too.

3. The Materials

The material that is used for manufacturing the water bottle is one of the things that separates one bottle from the rest. Some bottles have been proven to pose health risks, while others are much healthier and safer.

Plastic water bottles – Plastic bottles are the most widely used, and a lot of them are considered unhealthy. The reason for that is because the majority of plastic bottles may contain BPAs and other dangerous chemicals.

Metal water bottles – Different metals can be used like copper, stainless steel, and aluminum. Metal water bottles have different advantages and disadvantages. In some cases, they may contain BPAs and other chemicals.

Glass water bottles – Glass water bottles have many upsides as they are BPA-free. Glass is also one of the best materials for storing water is it doesn’t alter its taste in any way. However, they are easy to break.

4. Nozzle

For people that are working out, riding a bicycle, or jogging may prefer a water bottle that has a nozzle. A nozzle will allow you to drink water on the go without having the need to take off the lid. Also drinking from a bottle that has a nozzle is a lot cleaner and will produce fewer spills.

5. Insulation

The bottle needs to be able to keep the water cold for as long as possible.

What you want is a water bottle that has a double-walled construction — that way, the water has no direct connection to the outside environment. The separation created by the two walls allows for the water to stay colder (or hotter) for a longer time.

This is especially important if you were looking for a bottle that can be used for freezing water as you don’t really want the water to get warm quickly.

How to Freeze Water in a Bottle

When you place water in the freezer, it initially contracts (or shrinks in size). However, a very peculiar aspect of water is that as it gets colder and reaches a point of freezing it will expand by about 9% of its initial volume. (2)

So when frozen, water takes more space.

And here is the thing.

This will cause a lot of pressure and stress on the material of the container the water is placed in (especially if it is a sealed bottle).

Most bottles are not suitable to have water frozen in them as they will break as a result of the contraction and expansion of the water.

How Long Does It Take to Freeze a Water Bottle?

The time it usually takes for water to freeze in a bottle is going to be between two to four hours

. The freezing time will vary a lot depending on various factors like:

The temperature of the water in the bottle.

The size of the bottle.

The temperature of the freezer.

Can You Freeze Stainless Steel or Glass Water Bottles?

Metal, Glass, and other bottles made from solid materials are not recommended for freezing water.

Considering the dangers of some of the lower quality and cheaper plastic bottles, many may consider a water bottle made from different material like stainless steel or glass.

The downside to any metal or glass water bottle is going to be that this material is not pliable.

When water freezes, it expands its size, and this will apply tremendous force on the bottle, which will usually break it.

I have even tried freezing water in mugs and had the mugs break.

If freezing water in a mug can lead to the mug breaking, imagine what will happen to a closed non-pliable bottle. So make sure to always follow the recommendations from the manufactures.

Are There Any Alternatives to Freezing a Water Bottle?

Sometimes you may not have enough time to leave the bottle in the freezer to have it properly frozen.

But you really want to have cold and refreshing water for when you go outside in a few minutes.

So what do you do in that case?

I sometimes find myself in this situation when I either forget or just don’t have enough time to have the water frozen. There are several things that I usually do:

I make sure to place the water bottle in the evening (or ideally have more than one water bottle stored in the freezer or the refrigerator).

I always have a bottle or two in the refrigerator. That way, even if I don’t have frozen water, I still have cold water.

I always have a few ice cube trays filled up and ready to be used.

What I like to do is to add ice cubes all the way to the top and then fill the water bottle with cold water. It is not like having all the water frozen, but it is the next best thing to have.

Also, I’d like to stress the importance of having a water bottle with really good insulation as this will make sure your water stays cold for as long as possible.
